Rusty Cooley
USA Extreme Instrumental Shred
Rusty Cooley's new demo
CD just cooks. If your looking for instrumental guitar with bite his work
will surely do it! He is getting a huge following on the net and
is on the brink of becoming a very well known player through out the guitar
industry online. He also just released a instructional CD-ROM for Chops
from Hell (which was review here at The Shred Zone in the
Instructional Reviews Section). His skill is mouth dropping
and I think you can learn a lot from his playing. So let s get on
with it.
Track one "War of
the Angels" is amazing. It opens with a drop tuned guitar riff that
pounds through your speakers. The main hook line is killer, it's melodic
and catchy. My favorite part begins at 1:17 where he presents a
repeating lick for the first time, and it's a palm muted lick that really
got my attention. Rusty covers lots of ground in this song using all kinds
of modes and runs. His use of the Harmonic Minor scale is very prominent
in this song. The title is very fitting, I can picture a battle between
good and evil in this one. "Hillbilly Militia" is another mind-boggling
number. The opening lick knocked me off the chair. The main riff
is drop tuned and man does it have balls. I think the main focus of this
song is the rhythm section, and it progresses into each new movements
flawlessly (no abrupt changes in another words). Rusty brings in additional
mini lead lines every so often like the one at 2:07 with a killer open
string movement that goes into high speed antics. Try jamming along
with this one! "Dominion" is a really heavy roller,
with my favorite palm muted licks all over the song. Rusty really
goes nuts with them here; this track is one of my favorites that's for
sure. This tune has a very Neo-classical feel to it and I dig. And for
you arpeggio nuts, there's plenty of them all over the place, and the
are executed at the highest degree. "E.B.E." song four beings
with a walking guitar line that has a soul of it's own. I love the progressive
lick at 1:27, it's really cool and it's the first time I think I've ever
heard anything like that before. This song is such a monster and I know
you'll love it within 30 seconds! Cooley also has an amazing knack
for using the Pentatonic scale. He does some pretty wild things with it,
it made me go and work on my pentatonic licks harder. Rusty also
cranked up the WAH WAH to help blend his lead tones, and it really helped
bring his leads to life even more. Man was I wrong with "Piece of
Mind" track five, I thought I was going to get a nice slow number
with clean guitars, but no way! Rusty slammed out another gut wrencher. He
belts out some amazing fret board acrobats in this one. Check out
00:47 - 1:12 for one of the most intense arpeggio sections you'll ever
hear! He goes 30 seconds none stop. I have to wonder if his fingers
melted afterwards, it's mind-blowing to say the least and he uses this
as the repeating hook of the song. Get out those metronomes and start
practicing boys! Last but not least "The Butcher" will
literally cut you to pieces with some amazing guitar playing. You want
shred? Well, Rusty delivers the goods on this one without a doubt! I can't
begin to list all of the licks and tricks, there are just to many so take
my word for it, they all kick major guns! Overall, I have to say
I can't wait to get the official release of this demo CD. Rusty Cooley
is one guitar not to overlook. He has the skill, technique and balls to
break some new ground in the instrumental guitar industry. The one thing
that he does different than most is that he pounds out some of the hardest
and heaviest backing riffs I've have ever heard on an instrumental guitar
CD Sound quality is pro all the way. He spent some time recording this
one, and didn't skimp on the recording that's for sure. I give this
demo a 11 out 10, for skill, technique inspiration and all out balls!
Rusty you did a killer job and get this demo into a full length CD real
fast because every one will be wanting a copy of this one. Thanks
Rusty!
